Julien Green, l’uomo duplicato. L’autotraduzione come forma della narrazione di sé

Abstract

Siamo noi a scegliere la lingua in cui scriviamo, e fino a che punto il linguaggio fa davvero parte di noi? Da alcune questioni continuamente rimodulate lungo l’opera di Julien Green prende spunto questa riflessione sul rapporto del romanziere con le sue storie, e sul legame tra memoria personale e immaginazione nel processo artistico. Tutto è romanzo, o forse tutto è autobiografia in una ibridazione di generi e di registri speculare alla duplicità linguistica e culturale nella quale Green si trova immerso. Green autotraduttore si sovrappone a Green traduttore che parla di Green scrittore, o è Green scrittore che tiene le fila della storia e sdoppia il suo universo moltiplicandolo nel prisma linguistico? L’autotraduzione diventa allora, insieme all’autobiografia e alla diaristica, una terza forma di riflessione, una variazione ironica, profondamente poetica nella sua autenticità, sul mestiere di scrittore. 

Is it us who choose the language in which we write, and to what extent is language really a part of us? Starting from some issues continually reshaped along the work of Julien Green, this reflection delves on the relationship between the novelist and his stories, and on the link between personal memory and imagination in the artistic process. Everything is novel, or perhaps everything is autobiography through a hybridization process of genres and registers mirroring the linguistic and cultural duplicity in which Green is immersed. Is Green’s position as a self-translator overlapping with that of Green as translator who speaks of Green as a writer? Or is it rather Green the writer who pulls the strings of history and splits his universe, multiplying it in the linguistic prism? The self-translational act then becomes, together with the biographical and diaristic one, a third form of reflection, an ironic variation, deeply poetic in its authenticity, on the profession of the writer.
