Abstract

The article presents two theatrical adaptations based on "Two women,", Alberto Moravia's novel and the renowned film directed by Vittorio De Sica. The first work we are talking about is the one created by composer Marco Tutino commissioned by the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House in 2015, a melodrama mainly based on the 1960 film. The second adaptation analyzed here consists of an unpublished script written by Annibale Ruccello in 1985, closely aligned with Moravia's novel. This version, in harmony with the critical perspective of the novel, projects the two protagonists into a hypothetical future left suspended in the narrative epilogue. The research thoroughly examines these two plays, investigating their connections to the original works and underlining the diverse perspectives through which the events are reinterpreted on the stage.
