Abstract

This essay briefly analyses detectives who work in pairs: from the seminal Auguste Dupin from Poe and, of course, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, quickly moving on to those of Agatha Christie (Poirot and Hastings) and A. A. Fair (Bertha Cool and Donald Lam); then focusing on the Nero Wolfe / Archie Goodwin pair by Rex Stout. We examine their characteristics, also in comparison with the archetypal Holmes-Watson pair.
