Abstract

Georges Arthur Goldschmidt, che dovette fuggire dalla Germania nel 1938 all’età di 10 anni in seguito alla persecuzione antisemita, arrivò in Francia, passando per l'Italia, nel 1939: qui, sin dal primo momento, la lingua francese gli apparve come l’idioma della salvezza e della resistenza contro il Nazionalsocialismo; egli iniziò a provare vergogna per la sua origine di parlante tedesco, e cominciò ad esprimersi e a  scrivere esclusivamente in francese. Solo attraverso la lingua tedesca letteraria, in particolare quella di Kafka, alla quale si avvicinò negli anni del suo studio alla Sorbona, ritrovò l’interesse per la sua lingua madre. Il presente contributo intende sottolineare la tensione fra la lingua madre considerata perduta e poi riacquisita, e la lingua della salvezza e della rinascita concentrandosi sull’autotraduzione che Goldschmidt realizzò traducendo egli stesso la sua autobiografia dal francese al tedesco.

Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt, who in 1938, when he was ten years old, had to flee from antisemitic persecution in Germany, arrived in France in 1939, after a short stay in Italy. From the first moments on the French language appeared to him as the language of salvation and of resistance against nazism. He even started feeling ashamed of his linguistic origins and expressed himself only in French. It was only through literary German, especially Kafka’s, that he approached his mother tongue during his years as a student at the Sorbonne in post war Paris. In this essay I want to analyse the tension between Goldschmidt’s lost and then obliquely refound German mother tongue and his language of salvation and rebirth by looking especially at the self translation of his autobiography, first written in French and then translated into German with significant changes.
